Police have arrested a man they believe to be responsible for multiple car break-ins in Marlborough and many surrounding towns.

"Mr. Carty also made statements which implicated him in similar crimes in other municipalities including Hudson, Westborough, Sudbury, Shrewsbury, and Clinton," according to a press release put out by Marlborough Police detailing the arrest.

Police arrested Christopher Carty, 27, of 207 Lincoln Street Apt. 3 on Route 290 Westbound Thursday. The arrest followed an ongoing investigation which gave police information about a vehicle and suspect related to break-ins the area of the Rail Trail near Sasseville Way.

Officers observed a vehicle fitting the description of suspect vehicle in the area of Sasseville Way. After conducting a stop of the vehicle, Carty was placed under arrest for various motor vehicle offenses, according to officials.

During an interview with officers, Carty’s involvement with the vandalisms, larcenies, and break-ins into several vehicles in the area of the Rail Trail in Marlborough was verified, according to the release. This was also the time when Carty made the statements which implicated him in other break-ins, said police.

Officers recovered an extensive amount of property and attempts are being made to locate the owners. The potential exists that some victims may not have reported similar crimes to their respective police departments as the majority of the recovered property is pocketbooks, purses, and smaller items held within, said police.

He was on charges of a subsequent offence of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended licence, driving with a cracked windshield, 8 counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle/boat during the daytime for a felony, 3 counts of larceny over $250, 8 counts of vandalism, 4 counts of larceny under $250 and two counts of receiving stolen property over $250.

The investigation into other break-ins Carty may have been involved with is ongoing, said police officials.
