Today, we relay five facts about the presidential election in the United States, according to randomfacts.com.

Though we're posting only five facts here from randomfacts.com, the site offers 25 interesting facts. Worth a read, for sure.

Here are our five favorites from the site:

1. Ronald Reagan still holds the record for the most popular votes and the highest number of electoral votes in history, which happened in 1984. He got 54,455, 075 popular votes and 525 electoral votes.

2. John F. Kennedy debated Richard Nixon on Sept. 26, 1960. That was the first time there was an official presidential debate on TV.

3.So how did we come up with a date for the election?Apparently, the idea to hold the election on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November was largely due to the fact that it was a convenient time for farmers—the weather was still nice for travel, and a lot of their crops were also harvested. It was also chosen so the election would never be held on the first day of the month.

4.The first official presidential election was in 1789. George Washington was elected, and 10 of the 13 states participated.

5.There have been four times in history that the candidate who received the most popular votes did not get elected president.
