Vital Signs. Anushka Dasgupta, class of 2015, won third place in the annual poster competition sponsored by the American Statistical Association. The UMASS Medical Center will make the award to Anushka in the Rotunda on Friday, Sept. 21. AP Statistics is taught by Diane DeSantis, Chair of the math department.

Green Day. On Sept. 7, Algonquin held its third annual One School, One Book event. The book, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, was selected by a committee of teachers, parents and students in the spring of 2012. The author visited with us in two dimensions via Skype, and other sessions included a directed discussion of themes found in the story, and an activity fair centered on the book. During the three hour event, students participated in all of the sessions. Jane Betar, English teacher and chair, led the committee through the selection process, the activity planning, and the implementation.

Shave and a Haircut. The New England Harmony Brigade sent a platoon of singing barbers to 79 Bartlett St. on Friday, Sept. 14 to participate in a workshop with Algonquin Choral groups. The Brigade appeared on Saturday in concert at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. Undaunted by a fire evacuation on Friday, they serenaded the staff and students in the
parking lot as we waited for the all clear.

Tomahawk Tribute. At the summer 2012 Bay State Games, Algonquin was awarded $500 to support its athletic department as a result of popular voting among all Games’ participants. Algonquin gained the second highest vote tally among schools with over 1,000 students.

I, Padius. Through the generosity of the Southborough Education Foundation and other community organizations and businesses, the Family and Consumer Science classes were able to raise $10,700 to purchase 19 new iPads that will be used for the new Senior Survival class as well as the Nutrition & Culinary Arts classes. Additional funding has been received from Avidia Bank, Northborough Rotary Club, Central One Federal Credit Union, Digital Credit Union, St. Mary's Credit Union, and the Marlborough Savings Bank. Sue Halpin designed this course, and secured the funding.

Alera Gets Three Years. The New England Theatre Conference held its election in June and Tom Alera, English teacher, was elected to a three-year term on the board in the division for Secondary Education. This covers all six states in New England, and the board consists of professionals, repertory theaters, semi-pros, college, regional, and high school. Unscripted, Alera was quoted as saying “This will be a great connection for our school and for the world of theater!“

21st Century Guidance. The Guidance Department has met with teachers and seniors to discuss the college application process and instructed them to begin using our electronic request process for transcript & recommendations (EDOCs). We also had a good turnout at the parent night. More than 125 showed up.

The Commitments. The Senior class has raised over $750 the last two weekends at community events. The first was a car wash in Southborough, and the second was hosting a kid's booth at Applefest with face painting, cookie decorating, and jewelry making. Over 35 seniors are currently participating in Steering Committee with the goal of raising enough money this year to make senior events such as Senior Ball under $15 per person, or free if we can! This included no dues for senior year.
