State Trooper, 44, Loses Battle With Disease

State Police Lt. Matthew Murray died Sept. 14, 2012.

Matthew J. Murray, of Shrewsbury, a State Police lieutenant, died Friday, Sept. 14, after a more than seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma. He was 44.

Murray was born in Boston on Jan. 11, 1968, a son of Andrew E. Murray Sr. and Virginia M. (Barry) Murray. Murray was raised and educated in Northborough, he graduated in 1986 from St. John's High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from UMass Dartmouth and a master's from Anna Maria College.

He married Carla J. Fuhrmann on Feb. 22, 2000. They lived in Auburn before building their home in Shrewsbury five years ago.

Murray was a Massachusetts State Police lieutenant who was the head supervisor of the Criminal Information Section in Maynard. He entered the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 1992, and was promoted to sergeant in 2005 before becoming a lieutenant in 2011.

He enjoyed camping, coaching his boys in Shrewsbury Little League, working hard and coming home to be with his family and the embrace of his boys as he arrived. He enjoyed traveling, particularly to Bermuda. 

In addition to his wife, Carla, he leaves his sons, Aidan and Justin; his mother, Virginia M. Murray of Northborough; his father, Andrew E. Murray Sr. and his wife, Sheila, of Pocasset; his siblings, Mary Kernan and her husband, Walter, of Woodbridge, CT, Dianne Young and her husband, John, of Holden, Andrew Murray Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, of Shrewsbury and Virginia Massey and her husband, Bruce, of Farmingdale, ME; his step-brother, Matthew McQuade and wife Jennifer, of Holden and his stepsister, Megan Hart and husband, Tony of Scarborough, ME; nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Rd., On the Common, Shrewsbury, and again at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning before a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
