The mother of a University of New Hampshire student whose car was struck nearly head on by the wrong way driver during Monday night's multiple vehicle crash on I-95 believes one thing may have saved her life.
Jackie Garvey told the Union Leader on Wednesday that her daughter, Kathlyn Garvey, 22, of Northborough, was heading back to the Durham campus when she saw the 2010 Chevy Aveo driven by 56-year-old Rose M. Vitiello of New Haven, Conn., coming right at her. Garvey told the newspaper her daughter turned her car slightly to the left right before impact.
State Police said Garvey was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital and treated for minor injuries and released. Vitiello was also transported by Portsmouth Fire and Rescue ambulance to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. On Wednesday, the Union Leader reported that State Police could not say why Vitiello was driving in the northbound lane but their investigation that is being led by State Trooper Brian Gacey shows that Vitiello was driving south in the northbound lane for a few miles from the New Hampshire/Maine line.
On Tuesday, State Police said that after Vitiello struck the first car, she hit Garvey's 2008 Volkswagon Jetta head on. The impact caused Garvey's vehicle to roll over in the grassy median. Two other cars struck debris from the accident in the roadway, but were not hurt.
