With her sharp sense of humor, dedication to education, and genuine concern about the children and families of Northborough, Nancy Berglund has become one of the most well-known fixtures on the School Committee.
Serving on it for the last ten years, Nancy Berglund celebrated her retirement with a heartfelt sendoff at the meeting last Wednesday.
"Let them eat cake," cracked Berglund, as the committee presented her with a cake and several tolkens of appreciation, including a crystal apple and certificates from the Senate and House of Representatives.
"There are just so many people who want to thank her," said Superintendent of Schools Charles Gobron. "I have appreciated her expertise, especially, in the area of early childhood education. We are deeply grateful to her commitment to families, which shows at every meeting."
Board member Shirley Lundberg added that Berglund had been a "mentor" to her, paving the way for more women getting involved in government and committees in town. "You always put students in the forefront," she added.
"It doesn't seem like it's been 10 years, which is a good sign," added member Joan Frank.
Berglund, whose extensive resume also includes positions as a rape crisis counselor and interim professor at Quinsigamond Community College, thanked everyone, stating she was fortunate to be chosen to serve on the committee for so many years.
"I am so fortunate to be in all of your company," she said, "and everything you do to make the best possible education for our children .... thank goodness for the gifts or this would be more like a wake."
