When Virginia Simms-George visited the Board of Selectmen weeks ago to announce the annual Louise Houle Town-Wide Clean-Up, Selectman Aaron Hutchins asked, "I had heard a rumor you are retiring ... are you?"

Simms-George quietly uttered that she was. She confirmed with Northborough Patch that she isn't so much "retiring" as she decided not to to "be reappointed" to the Community Affairs Committee, on which she has served for the last 15 years.

Effective April 30, she is officially stepping down.

"Early on, the committee experienced low membership and challenging budget issues," said Simms-George. "We've worked hard to solicit members and build a budget that supports our programs.  Today, our membership is strong and our programs have experienced solid participation from the community. These factors present a great opportunity to transition from the committee at this time."

Asking what she'll miss the most serving on the committee, she replied, "The opportunity to work with the residents of Northborough and to have a positive impact on the  community."

Currently, Simms-George also serves at the chair of the Personnel Board as well as a Northborough representative for the Assabet Regional Vocational High School Committee.

"I plan to continue on those boards and consider other areas of opportunity  to serve as they become available," she said.
