Heather Capes (right) at mile 23 with her sister, Holly Harney, who joined her at mile 21 to run the last five miles of the 2012 Boston Marathon. She has run seven Boston Marathons and three other marathons as well.

Two explosions occurred near the Boston Marathon finish line around 3 p.m., with an untold number of bystanders suffering injuries.

WHDH Channel 7 of Boston shows video of the explosion going off as runners leg across the finish line, smoke rising from the side of Boylston Street. The marathon was suspended.

News outlets such as CNN are reporting that two have been killed, and more than 100 are injured from the explosion.

There were 15 runners from Northborough in the race on Monday, with several finishing the marathon before the explosion occurred.

Northborough resident Sandra Gittlen, who was running to raise money for the Baypath Humane Society in Hopkinton, was supported by family and friends from the shelter, who tracked her along the route. Emily Cabrera, also a Northborough resident, was among those tracking Gittlen's progress, and joined fans in waving and cheering for her as she ran through Wellesley.

"After seeing her, we headed home," said Cabrera. "I got in about 3 p.m. and came home to posts of breaking news and explosions at the finish. We were devastated. What a horrible end to an amazing day. Just before 4 p.m. Baypath posted that they have communicated with her and she was ok."

Baypath Humane posted on its Facebook page,"Wanted to let you know that Sandy who is running the marathon for the shelter is okay and was not near the explosions. Thank you for supporting us as well as Sandy. We are sorry to anyone that was injured in the incident and our hearts are with you."

Heather Capes, running her eighth Boston Marathon, reported to Northborough Patch that, "I am ok. Scary day," and said she was in "lockdown at the Westin."

A reader also reported to Patch that Joe Montiverdi, Ryan Toumi and Joe Lavallee all completed the race and "they and their families are safe."

Capes posted on Facebook that "John Ouano, Meredith Kent Susan Willworth, Heather Capes and Chris Benestad are all ok. Shaken though."

If you or anyone you know was in or at the Marathon today, please comment in the comments section below or email charlene.arsenault@patch.com with feedback.
