Submitted by Scott Zoback, district press secretary, Congressman McGovern
Congressman Jim McGovern, D-MA, announces the 2013 Congressional Art Competition Winner for the 2nd Congressional District at an official Opening/Artists’ Reception, Friday, April 12, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Northampton Center for the Arts. The opening will be a part of Northampton’s monthly Arts Night Out, and will include students who submitted art, their families, friends and teachers, and the general public.
The competition’s overall winner, as well as individual category winners, will be announced at the reception. The winning piece will hang in the United States Capitol for the next year, alongside other winning artwork from throughout the country. The winner will be invited to attend an unveiling ceremony at the Capitol with Congressman McGovern later this year.
Other winning artwork from the district will hang at McGovern’s district offices for the next year.
“Every year, I am amazed by the quality of art being produced by our students," said McGovern. "Their work is a testament to what strong arts programs in our schools can produce. I’m honored to have such incredible submissions to our district’s competition, and humbled to know that I’ll be able to see our local winner everyday as I walk to the floor of the House in Washington.”
More than 75 students from schools across the 2nd Congressional District submitted over 100 pieces to the competition. The national competition, initiated by Congress in 1982, includes hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the nation. One piece from each congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
