The Northborough Baseball and Softball Association has voted to accept a settlement offer of $83,000 as a payment in return for a claim that a former treasurer misappropriated funds.
In January, 13 board members of NSBA voted unanimously to ask police to pursue criminal charges after allegations that former treasurer Edward R. Tache misappopriated as much as $75,000 in funds, according to the Telegram and Gazette.
"Under the terms of the settlement, NSBA will receive $83,000 and will release the former treasurer from further claims," read a letter to association members. "This closes the civil matter though the Northborough Police Department is still investigating the criminal matter. We are very happy that we were able to put this matter behind us before the start of the upcoming season, so our focus can be on what is most important for Northborough baseball and softball."
The discovery of the discrepency, read the letter, was "very troubling to the NBSA board despite reaching a settlement in the civil matter and recovering a substantial portion of the misappropriated funds."
In response, said the association, it has re-examined its procedures for handling money, putting in tigher controls and checks-and-balances in an effort to ensure that it will not happen again.
