Signs of Spring: Ice Cream and Hot Dogs

You can get ice cream at Trombetta's. That proves that it's spring. Trombetta's has been open since March 22, and BeeZers, the Chicago hot dog king that shares the location with Trombetta's, will be following shortly behind sometime in April (owners aren't certain on the date yet).

Laura Barsamian, owner of Trombetta's, said that new offerings this year include "Dirt Cups." That entails soft serve ice cream covered in "dirt," which is finely crushed Oreo cookies, Gummi worms and candy rock.

This year, too, Trombetta's has added a suggestion box.

"It's fun to see what special flavors and treats our customers would like to see," said Barsamian, who added that a small cutting garden and yard sculpture may be added this year.

Other springlike openings to note: Davidian Brothers Farm is re-opening on April 4, according to its announcement on its Facebook page.

Wondering about Tougas Farm, as well? We did, too. Sadly, it looks like the doors won't open until mid-June, as Tougas bases its opening around strawberry season. Last year, because of the incredibly mild spring, the farm opened up earlier. This so, it is more "on schedule," said the family.
