The National Weather Service is predicting between 6-10 inches of "heavy, wet" snow accumulation late Saturday night through Sunday morning, and issued a winter storm watch and hazardous weather outlook for the Northborough area.
The snow will hit the region on Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest occurring at night and into Sunday morning, according to the NWS. A 1-2 inch per hour snowfall rate is possible, and the potential exists for a heavy snow that may down trees and create scattered power outages.
Jim Arnold, weather specialist with the Shrewsbury Emergency Agency, said that the "inland areas of Massachusetts will be walking a temperature tightrope, with as little as one degree making all the difference in the precipitation type for any given area. My best idea continues to be that the rain/snow line will set up along the Mass Pike and Route 495. Areas to the north and west of this boundary will see a significant, likely disruptive snowfall on the order of 6 to 14 inches from southeast to northwest."
Arnold predicts the snow to reach between 4-8 inches in the Northborough, while climbing to a possible 12 inches in the Shrewsbury area.
"Temperatures will remain in the 30s during Saturday," said Arnold, "ranging from the high 30s to the southeast to the mid 30s to the northwest. When the heavier precipitation begins during Saturday night, I expect temperatures to fall slowly into the low 30s throughout most of our region and stay there during Sunday. In central Massachusetts wind will not be an issue, which is fortunate with trees and power lines coated with the wet and heavy snow."
