A man struck by a tractor trailer Monday morning on I-290 in Northborough, near the Marlborough line, is expected to survive, according to Massachusetts State Police.

At 9:05 a.m., troopers from the state police barracks in Holden responded to several 911 calls for a pedestrian who was struck by a tractor trailer on Route 290 westbound in Northborough.

A 42-year-old man from Northborough had pulled his 2000 Honda Civic over into the breakdown lane. The male, for reasons yet to be determined, walked out into the travel lane and was subsequently struck by a tractor trailer unit, said police. The man was transported to UMass Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries and is expected to survive.

The cause of the crash, as well as the reason the male had pulled over and exited his car, is currently under investigation.

The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Photo also responded to the crash and are assisting in the investigation. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Northborough Fire Department.

The right and center lanes were closed for approximately two hours to allow for rescue operations and the gathering of evidence.
